The news section highlights recent developments on EETS and road tolling in Europe. 

 

First infringement procedure related to EETS Directive completed by EU Court

The European Commission has initiated several infringement procedures against Member States for incomplete or wrong transposition of the EETS Directive (EU) 2019/520. Where no satisfactory resolution is achieved, such cases are refered to the Court of Justice of the European Union. On 30 April 2026 the first case related to the EETS Directive was concluded. In case C-479/23, Commission v Bulgaria, the Court found that Bulgaria failed to adopt and notify the neceddary national measures to fully implement the EETS Directive on the interoperability of electronic road toll systems by the deadline of 19 October 2021.

Lithuania prepares for e-toll: EETS Domain Statement open for Public Consultation until May 1

Starting on 1st of January 2027, Lithuania will introduce a nationalwide electronic road tolling system (e-toll). The project is being implemented by Via Lietuva in cooperation with Austrian technology provider Kapsch TrafficCom, which was selected through an international open tender.
